ASSU Update - Big Game Week Edition!
Share
Hi Stanford,

Happy Big Game Week! In case you haven't heard, Stanford Football crushed USC on Saturday 55-21 (most points ever given up by USC)! Now it is time to Beat Cal and bring the Axe back home! See you at Big Game and please remember to donate blood and help save lives tomorrow in the Rivals For Life blood drive competition with Cal. Have a great Thanksgiving, good luck on "midterms," and take the Student Services Division Airport Shuttle to the airport for winter break ($14/ticket)!

As many of you know, ASSU Vice President Jay de la Torre recently resigned. Jay has contributed immensely to the work of the ASSU Executive and he will be deeply missed on the Executive team and throughout the ASSU and the Stanford community. I am appointing Andy Parker, current Joint Chief of Staff, to Vice President and Farah Abuzeid to Joint Chief to replace Andy. Andy and Farah are currently being confirmed by the Undergraduate Senate and Graduate Student Council.

Beat Cal!!

2. Big Game Week Activities
The annual Rivals For Life blood drive is taking place tomorrow at the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation 11AM-8PM. Please donate blood and help Stanford crush Cal and save lives. For more information and to make an appointment go here. Each donor will receive a commemorative T-shirt and one lucky donor will win a prize drawing for two field passes for Big Game!

The Cardinal Council, the Stanford Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, is again sponsoring “Big Drive” in conjunction with Big Game. Traditionally this event has been a competitive canned food drive between Stanford and Cal’s Athletic Departments. However, this year all students and fans are invited to participate in this event during the week prior to Big Game. “Big Drive” will take place from Monday, November 16th, through Saturday, November 21st. Student athletes will be collecting canned food items at the Men’s Basketball game on November 18th and the Women’s Basketball game on November 19th. Items will also be collected in the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center, and on the day of Big Game in the Fan Fest area, which is located on the outside of the stadium near the track. All items will be donated to 2nd Harvest Food Bank. The winner of the Big Drive will be announced during the Big Game.

For more Big Game Week activities see the schedule.

3. Submit Yearbook Photos
Get your pictures in the Stanford Quad yearbook! They are looking for pictures from fall quarter events that include: rushing the field for the Oregon game, USC game, Big Game week, Big Game, Halloween/Mausoleum Party, athletic games, scavenger hunt, screw your sib, performances around campus, events for a cause, and the social life in your dorms. The deadline to submit is Thursday, December 5 at 11:59PM. For details on how to submit go here.

4. The Axe & Palm Price Reductions
We are proud to announce that the ASSU Executive Cost of Living team has worked in collaboration with The Axe & Palm (TAP) to reduce prices on over 20 items by over 27% on average! This is part of a bigger initiative by the ASSU Executive to lower student cost of living across campus. TAP General Manager Barbara Whittaker praised TAP’s new chef: “Chef Rodney Baca joined the Axe & Palm in October and has consistently been reviewing food quality and competitive pricing to ensure customer satisfaction. Rodney worked with our vendors to find quality products consistent with a value that would present student favorites at a more competitive price. Based on this research, the Axe and Palm management was able to identify some menu items that could be offered at a reduced price.”

8. Undergraduate Senate Update
The Senate urges all student groups to review the Green Events Checklist, prepared by the Sustainability Subcommittee, to help your event succeed sustainably. We're also writing revisions to the Special Fees system to keep your student fees down. Next, we hope you enjoyed the Mausoleum Party, and we're working hard to implement a year-to-year fund to guarantee such all-campus social events in the future. Lastly, we'd like to welcome our Senate Associates, and look forward to a productive winter quarter with them.

We are always looking for individuals who like to work hard and are passionate about improving Stanford and affecting change in the broader community. Serving in the ASSU can be a great introduction to public service here at Stanford and is a tremendously rewarding experience. Below are brief descriptions of a few of the positions we offer to incoming students in the fall. We hope you will consider these as an introduction to student government at Stanford. We're going to have a lot of fun this year, and really make this campus a better place. Join us!

Executive Fellows
Executive Fellows work closely with the ASSU President and ASSU Vice President and their cabinet on the most important issues the ASSU will address. These include cost of living & equality, sustainability, diversity & tolerance, campus health & wellness, life & academics, public service, dependent health care, and more. For details please see the Executive agenda. Executive Fellows are each assigned to work with a cabinet team and the time commitment is 5-10 hours/week. The application is here here and the deadline is 10/3/09 11:59PM.

Undergraduate Senate Associates
The Senate Associates Program is the best way to familiarize yourself with the Undergraduate Senate and get the ball rolling for the new year! Senate Associates will assist members of the Undergraduate Senate and will predominantly focus on advocacy and policy issues. Each Senate Associate will have the opportunity to work directly with Undergraduate Senators on key projects and with each of the five Undergraduate Senate Committees. Senate Associates have the opportunity to create new projects of their own to benefit the Stanford Community, but most importantly, the Associates will gain vast knowledge from the Senators, who will serve as mentors during the year long program. Each year, the ASSU selects 10-15 incoming students who serve as Senate Associates.

Check out the application at http://senate.stanford.edu. Don't forget to apply by 11:59 PM on Thursday, October 1st.

Frosh Council
The ASSU Frosh Council consists of representatives from each dorm that houses freshmen. The group plans social activities for the freshmen class such as formal, a talent show, and a field day, and that sale of clothing and trinkets bearing the class numerals. The group also acts as a liaison between the ASSU, the Dean of Freshmen and Transfer Students, and the dorm. Elections for Frosh Council are usually held at each dorm's first House Meeting.

Nominations Commission
The ASSU Nominations Commission (NomCom) nominates students to University and Trustees committees through an application process. NomCom makes sure that student voices are heard in University decision-making. To view the list of 40-50 committees, please go to http://nomcom.stanford.edu.
