CDC

Career Development Center

Stanford’s Career Development Center has all of the information you need for getting a job, including information and opportunities for internships, networking, and putting together a resume. They also have a database of jobs both on and off campus. If you want personal help, you can stop by their offices in the second floor of the Student Services Building by the Haas Center (NOT to be confused with the Student Services Center in Tresidder).

The CDC has their own guide (pdf) to using their databases. Also, if you have any questions, email them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Getting Started

Jobs Database: Getting Started

To access the jobs database, you’ll need to log in.

If you are a new student or have never registered for Cardinal Careers, click the “New Student/Alumni Registration” tab and complete the registration form. To register, fill in the required information (field or block of fields next to a red *).

  • You should not include the leading 0 in your student ID number; it should be a 7 digit number.
  • If you haven’t declared a major, select “undeclared”.
  • If you want to select two majors, select the first one, then hold Ctrl, then select the second one. Both should now be selected.
  • The option “Privacy: Include in Resume Books” is in the event you want a copy of your primary resume to be included in the CDC’s e-resume book that’s made available to employers.

Immediately after you submit the online form, you will receive an email asking that you verify your email address by clicking the hyperlink in the email. Once your registration has been verified, you will receive a welcome message with your user name and password.

If you are interested in internship opportunities, you can also register for the iNet Internship Network to access additional internship opportunities.

Once registered, log in at the same website as before – if the link directs you to the sign up page, click the link on the top left to sign in.

If you access your profile by clicking the “profile” link on the top of the page, you can update information about yourself so that the CDC can better connect you with opportunities. You might want to take the opportunity now to change your password to something you’ll remember.

Searching

Searching for Jobs

Now, you can start searching for jobs on campus! Click on “jobs/internships” link at the top and then the “Jobs for Stanford students / alumni” sublink. Now, click on “Jobs.” If you want to see all jobs on campus, just change “Position Type” to “Stanford On-Campus Job” and click “Search.”

If you aren’t getting many results, make sure that “Ignore National Jobs” is set to “no” and that “Job Function,” “Industry,” and “Keywords” are all blank unless you need a specific type of job. If you accidentally selected something, the top option in each is blank. “Ignore National Jobs” will ignore any jobs without a location – the reason we can’t ignore them is because many on-campus jobs don’t list a city or state.

To get more information on a job, to find the contact information of the employer, or to apply, click on the job title.

Applying

Applying for Jobs

When you’re ready to apply, you’ll need to upload some additional documents. Click on the “Documents” link on the top of the page, click “Add New,” and choose the document that you want to upload. You will need a resume and probably, depending on the job, some additional documents. Repeat this process for each of the documents that the particular job requires.

The safest file type to upload is a pdf because it will display the same on every computer. If you have your resume as a word document, you can let the website automatically do the conversion for you and then use the “View” link to make sure that the pdf is displaying as you intended. You could also download a program such as PDFCreator which will install itself as a “printer” and let you create a PDF file by “printing” your word document and selecting PDFCreator as your printer.

Note: rather than going to the “Documents” link, it is possible to click on the “Add New” link directly in the page of the job to which you are applying.

Once you upload all of the required documents, you can use them to apply. Find the job the same way as described in the Searching for Jobs section, and click on the title of the job that you want to apply for. Instructions for applying will be on the right. Select the documents that you uploaded and click “Submit.” You should receive a confirmation email, and you have now applied to a job.

Employers

Posting a Job

To post a job:

  • Go to the Career Development Center website for employers
  • Click the link “Posting Jobs”
  • Log In:
    • If you have a username/password with our partner, NACElink, enter that information.
    • If you are a first time user of the NACElink system, click the “Register” tab. Upon submitting your registration, you will receive a confirmation note from the system. A system-generated password will be emailed to you within one day. You'll then come back to the log in page and enter your username and password.
    • At this point, you may want to change some of your account settings by clicking on the "account" and "profile" links. You can change default information for the jobs you post (phone number, address, name, privacy settings, email receipts, etc) and your account password.
  • From the “quick links” section on your account's home page, click “Create free job postings for Stanford students/alumni” to post a job for Stanford only (free of charge).
    • "Position type" includes multiple pieces of information that are not mutually exclusive. For instance, you will want to check one of the boxes indicating the hours (full time or part time), you will likely want to check that it's a Stanford on-campus job, you will want to indicate whether it is paid or unpaid, etc.
    • If you need to select multiple items from one selection box (work authorization, desired majors, job function, degree level), hold Ctrl and click on that item and all previously selected items will remain selected.
  • After your job is posted, students/alumni with applicable backgrounds will receive an email from the system to let them know a job of interest has been posted.
  • If you are having any issues, try using a different web browser -- some elements of the NACElink website work well in Google Chrome but not in Mozilla Firefox. If you have any questions or encounter any problems, please send an email to the Stanford Career Development Center: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
