Grad Student Town Hall 7/21/09 Follow-Up
Thank you to everyone who attended the event both in person and online! The presentation from the event along with a video and audio recording is below.

We have a very short follow-up survey we'd like you to fill out. We want to learn how we can make future events better and find out if there is interest in hosting another town hall on a different topic such as housing, dining, and/or transportation etc.

In addition, Vice Provost for Graduate Education Patti Gumport has sent along the information below the video/audio recordings for graduate students.

Please feel free to contact us anytime about anything. We look forward to serving you this year and always welcome suggestions and feedback.

Sincerely,
David Gobaud and Jay de la Torre
ASSU President and Vice President

Information from Vice Provost for Graduate Education Patti Gumport:
In these difficult times, we're all very concerned about graduate students who are experiencing financial hardship. Three resources were mentioned at the Town Hall. The first two are described in detail at http://www.stanford.edu/dept/finaid/grad/funding/other.html and they are administered by the Financial Aid Office.

* The Emergency Grant-in Aid Fund continues to be available for students with unanticipated financial hardship.

* There is a new Graduate Student Aid Fund established to help students pay University fees.

* Students who are studying away from the Bay Area for the entire quarter will be able to apply for a campus service health fee exemption. The process will involve filing a HelpSU ticket. The details of this process are still being developed, and they will be widely publicized once they are completed.

There are some good general sources of information for graduate students at several Stanford web sites.

* The Financial Aid Office's "Graduate Basics" page http://www.stanford.edu/dept/finaid/grad/ summarizes costs and resources.

* The Financial Aid Office determines each year's standard student budget (aka "the cost of attendance"), which is based on federal guidelines since it drives loan eligibility. See http://www.stanford.edu/dept/finaid/grad/budget/index.html for this year's and next year's budgets.

* The VPGE web page "Sources of Graduate Student Funding" http://vpge.stanford.edu/students/funding/sources.html gives an overview of different types of funding and what they provide.

Some students may still have questions about how graduate student financial support arrangements are determined, especially for doctoral students. Since financial support (forms, amounts, sources) varies so widely across graduate programs (and even within some!), it's difficult to offer short explanations that cover all possible situations. Financial aid arrangements are set locally by departments within university parameters, and are subject to the particular rules for each funding source. That's why students are referred back to departments when they have questions.

Thanks to the ASSU and GSC for providing a forum to learn more about graduate students' experiences and to share information.
