The primary function of the ASSU Legal Counseling Office is to provide legal advice and consultation to Stanford students, their spouses and domestic partners. The service is envisioned as the first step for any student who thinks that he or she might have a legal issue. The service is strictly confidential. When possible, the attorneys advise "preventive law," i.e. they attempt to analyze the possible consequences of an act before the student engages in the act. The resources of the Legal Counseling Office are devoted to the goal of educating the Stanford student body so that students may be better able to understand the law and to cope with those legal problems most frequently encountered by students. Take the ASSU Legal Counseling Office Satisfaction Survey Hours and LocationOffice Hours: The ASSU Legal Counseling Office is open Mondays from 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM for scheduling appointments. An attorney is on site on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM. The hours may vary throughout the quarter and the summer, so it is important to call 375-2481 to schedule an appointment. Eligibility for ServicesThe ASSU Legal Counseling Office is provided and funded by Stanford students through their special fees assessment. All registered Stanford students with Stanford ID and their spouses and domestic partners are eligible for counseling, provided they have not requested a refund of the special fees assessment. The services of the ASSU Legal Counseling are not available to faculty or staff or post-doctorates, except as beneficiaries of the general education function of the office.An attorney on our staff can give you the practical advice you need to best approach your legal issue. Actual representation in court is not a function of the office. If the case involves another student, one or both students may have to be referred to attorneys outside of the office. HistoryThe Associated Students of Stanford University Legal Counseling Office (ASSU LCO) is an integral part of the services provided by the ASSU. Started in 1973 by students who believed that Stanford students needed some place to turn for legal advice, the ASSU Legal Counseling Office has provided services to students for over 30 years. Attorneys from the San Jose law firm of McManis Faulkner staff the office. Several members of the firm are Stanford graduates. Budget approval and office operations are reviewed quarterly by the ASSU LCO Policy Board, which includes students as well as attorneys outside the law firm.StaffAttorneys from McManis Faulkner staff the office on a rotating basis.
