About Undergraduate Senate

About

The ASSU Undergraduate Senate was formed at the end of the 1998-1999 academic year. The former ASSU Senate, with the overwhelming support of the students of Stanford University, decided to divide into two separate governing bodies — the Undergraduate Senate and Graduate Student Council. These two organizations were expected to be more effective in addressing the unique needs of each student population.

The Undergraduate Senate is the official representative body of undergraduate student interests and concerns. Undergraduate Senate meetings are held every Tuesday at 7PM in The Nitery. It's open to all students and members of the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

The Senate is comprised of 15 undergraduates who are elected each spring in the general ASSU elections. The Senators represent a wide array of majors and interests. Each year the Senate picks a group 10-15 Senate Associates from the new freshmen and transfer students.

Constitution & Bylaws

Constitution

The ASSU Constitution is the supreme governing document of the ASSU and is a binding contract between the students and the administration of Stanford University. The ASSU maintains two versions of the Constitution: the working version, which incoporates the amendments into the main text of the Constitution (like the California Constitution), and the official version, which attaches the amendments after the main text of the Constitution (like the US Constitution).

Bylaws
The By-Laws of the ASSU Undergraduate Senate delineates the governing rules by which the Senate operates. The most recent version of the Senate By-Laws (updated March 8, 2006) is available here.

The Joint By-Laws of the ASSU delineates the governing rules by which the entire ASSU operates. The most recent version of the Joint By-Laws (updated March 9, 2006) is available here.
